Flick Chick: Dan in Real Life

We saw Dan in Real Life last night in our own real life. I laughed, I cried, I fell more in love with Steve Carell as a major player in Hollywood.
The beauty of Dan in Real Life is in the details-- the small quirks and flaws that make it real and funny and human. It's smart, and charming, and it doesn't take itself too seriously or try too hard for the magic moments. But the magic is there; this movie just entertains effortlessly. Mr. Carell is Dan, the timid widower and advice columnist. Juliette Binoche (of Chocolat) is the woman who captures Dan's heart. And then there is The Family-- admittedly the source of most of the movie's best moments. ("This corn is like an angel.") Ian loved it too, proving it's not just sentimental goo for the ladies. I give it a coveted Flick Chick rating of WOO-HOO!
This is a great movie on par with other family-driven romcom dramedies, such as The Family Stone, Something's Gotta Give, Little Miss Sunshine and the like. It's for anyone with a family, anyone who can appreciate the unsung drama that comes standard with teenagers, with love, with work... with real life.

I totally want to see this movie...and now I want to see it even more after reading your review.

Remember when we saw "Brokeback Mountain" the day before I went into labor with M? I think it was the jumbo popcorn with extra popcorn that did it.

We saw it tonight and I was going to blog about it, but you beat me to it. Dave and I both laughed, cried and then got pinkberry after it, a perfect ending to a perfect movie night. The movie was casual fun and the denousement seemed natural and not too overwritten. Two thumbs up.

I'm so glad people have enjoyed it, because I'd heard that it was getting good reviews, but our local newspaper guy didn't care for it much, and I was suddenly faced with this really difficult, life-altering, do-or-die decision: should I see it or skip it? Now I'm sure we'll enjoy it on our next movie night, thanks to all y'all's recommendations! Heaven bless the blogosphere.

i am curious about this movie now, because up to this point the only review i heard was from my roommate who hated it. she also hates her family and personal introspection, so maybe it was more about that.
