Cupcakes and Heartbreak

This weekend was full of cupcakes and heartbreak. I'll start with the former: my good friend Joan's wedding. A longstanding fan of my cupcakes, Joan asked if I'd do them for her big day. As my present to her, I did. So, Saturday I baked... and baked... and baked some more. There were triumphs (the coconut buttercream frosting for the dark chocolate cake-- delicioso! the dark chocolate buttercream for the white cake-- magnifico!) and tragedy (the white almond cake, batch #2, cupcake explosion.) But in the end there were 166 cupcakes, one layered cake for the top tier, and a very happy bride and groom on Sunday. The wedding was beautiful. The ceremony was personal and touching. The reception was a blast. The taco bar was awesome. Can anyone say more guac? Hi. Loved it.

Ian and I at the wedding. I'm thinking about guac-- I can see it in my eyes.

The blushing bride and groom.

Above is the cupcake tier all stacked up with the little bundles of joy. Dark brown wrappers (to match the wedding colors of brown, Tiffany blue, and bright orange) and fresh speckled orange orchids on top. This was before the whole thing was filled in on the right side; but you get the idea. The cake on top is 7x7" and I did it out of the same dark chocolate cake with coconut buttercream, but I filled it with the dark chocolate buttercream. Yummers!
Now to the heartbreak part. The Cubs lost on Saturday. A horrible end to a horrible sweep by the Diamondbacks. Stupid Arizona. With its stupid baseball team. I wore all black today to mourn the loss. Then I was going to take a pouty picture to commemorate, but it tuns out I look really bad pouting. So I took a smiley one instead... We'll call it hopeful for next season.
And, the Red Sox are still going strong, so we may have another Boston show at the series! Another reason to smile.Yay!

I just saw your like on Katie's blog, I think she just added it. I love blogs, if everyone had one I could find everyone I have ever known. It's cool to see what you are up to after soooo many years.

Wow, who knew? You should go pro! Seriously! Such a great idea for a cake substitute. I found all the ingredients, we're going to try the snickers ones this weekend. I'll let you know how they turn out!

(again, me, katie)

um, are you kidding me?? the cupcakes sound- and look- amazing laurel! and you do too! but you always have, so i'm not surprised.

every time i see a picture of ian i'm confused that his curly surfer hair isn't there anymore. he's forever frozen in my mind with his hair flopping around, driving that toyota van around laie.

and yes, sad cubs. (i'm acting like i keep up with sports, which i totally do not. but if i did it would be the cubs. #1 chip is from chicago #2 the best baselball game i've been to in my life was at wrigley field, seriously the best fans. ever.)

So gorgeous!

For my wedding, I served plain cheesecake with a topping bar (strawberries, chocolate fudge and blueberry glaze).

It baffled some people a little, but I've never been a fan of dry cake.

Totally delayed response - - but I think the Wedding Cupcakes are THE way to go (and you can even have 'cheesecake ones' for the cheesey peeps. Anyway - I will hoep that you are in business prior to my wedding....and with the way things are going (no boyfriend) you have plenty o' time...:-)
