Hollandaise Habits and Hobbits

If I were ever a professor of anything, it'd have to be of food or celebrity gossip... or bad-ass. Just kidding. But, seriously, I love food. I love eating. More than almost anything. That's normal, right?
My favorite weekend luxury (one that I'm so attached to that I'm afraid to have kids, or adopt a morning work out regimen, lest I lose this magnificent part of my Saturday) is going out to breakfast. My favorite weekend breakfast joint is Katy's Place in Carmel.
First of all, walking in Carmel is liking stepping into Fantasy Land where you half expect hobbits to skip out of their adorable, ocean-front thatched-roof cottages... Really rich hobbits.
Couple the surrounding quaint shops (read: Coach and Tiffany's) and fancy galleries with the tree-lined street and the smell of maple syrup in the air and you have a perfect Saturday morning spot: Katy's Place. Where, I'm proud to say, I've actually become a regular. (OK, so they don't know me by name or anything, but I've been immediately seated the last two visits when there are literally dozens of people waiting outside... Coincidence? Um, probably-- I'm usually in a party of 2, which is admittedly much easier to sit than the larger parties milling around outside with their strollers and coffee. But I'd like to think it's because they know me.)
Anyway, the point is I heart Katy's Place. And more importantly, the food. They have, no eggaggeration, 15 different kinds of eggs benedict-- which, until today, I happily downed an order of (with the side of country potatoes) careless and fancy free.
Today, though, I looked up the average calories of eggs benedict; I'm in a state of calorie awareness these days so that I don't undo my progress at the gym with 2,000 calorie meals. And, because Amie told me she looked it up and was horrified. Great. The average serving has 892 calories.
I can't say I'm surprised. I mean, Hollandaise sauce is basically butter and egg yolks (and possibly crack at Katy's) so you KNOW that can't be good for anyone's thighs. Granted, I usually don't get my benedict with ham-- which probably cuts down the calorie count... by, like, 800 for sure, right?-- but I'm pretty sure the hot chocolate (with giant swirl of real whipped cream and sprinkles on top-- they make it that way for everyone, I swear) isn't helping the calorie cause.
So-- dilemma. I can't give it up. Katy's is too important to my sanity in this crazy mixed-up world. And I'm not paying $12 for Katy's Place oatmeal instead. I am going to have to start adding a gym visit on Saturdays too, it seems.
Or I could just head down to the beach after breakfast and go for a run along the charming streets of ocean-front bazillion-dollar hobbit mansions... dreaming that I might someday afford to live there too, but then remembering that I will most likely squander our savings on my eggs benedict addiction. Who wants to live in Carmel fantasy land, anyway? I'm far too tall.

A good eggs benedits is definitely worth counting calories for the rest of the day...or just do some really vigorous shopping after each breakfast to burn some of those calories!

I love Carmel (the place and the burned milk). I just don't think I could ever live there...ppl would FOR SURE think I was a hobit.
When I come visit can we please go to Katy's Place? It sounds like perfection. I love that you are a foodie too.

Book yourself for 8 hours of brisk strolling that afternon (and, um, evening) and you'll be good as new. It's worth it.
